Bill Schwab views his work as an attempt to capture the fleeting moment, the transient visual effect of light on color and form at a certain place and time. He enjoys working on site with speed and directness to capture a feeling of immediacy and truth.
He received his early training at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, a traditional studio school. and later continued studies at the Art Students League with Max Ginsburg, Jerry Weiss, and Ephraim Rubenstein, the Scottsdale Artist’s School with Chris Groves, Arizona State and Indiana University, and numerous workshops with nationally recognized fine artists.
Bill worked for many years as an art director and creative director in the best advertising agencies in New York. Now, in addition to painting, he serves as Professor of Advertising and Director of the Creative Advertising program at Indiana University. While on campus he participates regularly in life drawing classes and IU studio art open critiques.
Bill’s paintings have been exhibited and won awards from the Indiana Plein Air Painters, Richmond Art Museum, Friends of T.C. Steele, Field to Finish Hoosier Art Salon, Garden State Watercolor Society, International Light Space and Time show, Brown County Gallery and Brown County Art Guild.
Bill and his wife MarySue, who is also a painter and painting teacher, are members of Indiana Plein Air Painters, The Hoosier Salon, the Bloomington Watercolor Society, the Arts Alliance of Greater Bloomington, and founding members of the Upland Plein Air Painters group.
